Mechanical failure causes Mt. Pleasant power outage

According to SCE&G officials, a mechanical failure caused 7,000 people in Mount Pleasant to lose power early Tuesday morning.

The electric company says that around 6:34 a.m. a "mechanical failure on a protective device" caused the power outage that affected 5,000 customers from the Isle of Palms connector to the Park West community.

Within 30 minutes, crews say they were able to repair the section for those customers, but 2,000 more customers found themselves without power.

Power to those customers was restored by 8 a.m.
