MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A Mt. Pleasant business owner wants to spread the word about hard to detect counterfeit money that apparently is turning up in the town.
Amanda Rosen, who owns Butterfly Consignments in the Belle Hall shopping center said a woman used a fake $100 bill to buy a $20 gift certificate from her store.
According to Rosen, her employee used a counterfeit detecting pen on the money, but it failed to detect it was phony.
"Pen cannot pick it up, so to the naked eye, unless you are truly trained and it's your job to look at those sort of things, you're not gonna have any idea whatsoever," said Rosen.
Rosen said her bank notified her the $100 bill was counterfeit. She said she's heard other phony $50 and $100 bills have been used at other businesses.
The U.S. Secret Service investigates all cases of counterfeiting.
