GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) -

The mother of a man wanted in connection with the shooting of an off-duty police officer turned in her son to authorities Wednesday night. Berkeley County sheriff's deputies have charged Dominque Jarard Barr with attempted murder.

Authorities say Barr shot an off-duty Moncks Corner police officer in Goose Creek. The bullet grazed the officer after he attempted to stop Barr after a traffic accident in Goose Creek Wednesday afternoon. The officer is expected to be OK.

Barr was booked at the Berkeley County Detention Center just after midnight Thursday and is expected to appear in bond court Thursday. According to the State Law Enforcement Division, Barr was convicted of petty larceny in July 2010.

Authorities say the officer saw a head-on-collision in front of him on Liberty Hall Road near Burbages Wholesale Meats Wednesday afternoon. According to investigators, someone involved in the accident ran from the area and the officer ran after him. Authorities say the suspect then turned around and shot at the officer, grazing his leg.

The officer was treated and released at the scene. Investigators had set up a perimeter in the area of Liberty Hall Road and Old Back River Road to search for the suspect.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed that a 2007 Toyota crossed the center line and hit a 2007 Chevy SUV traveling south on Liberty Hall Road. The driver of the Toyota ejected and went under the SUV. The passenger of the Toyota allegedly jumped out of the car with a gun and took off running.

The Berkeley Co Sheriff's Office and Goose Creek police held a press conference Wednesday afternoon. They say several agencies helped with the search including North Charleston, Hanahan and Moncks Corner Police Department.
