Coroner identifies man found dead outside shooting hut

Dorchester County sheriff's deputies are investigating after a 51-year-old Summerville man was found dead Thursday morning outside a shooting hut at a gun club.

The Dorchester County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as  William M. Rust. Rust died from a single gunshot wound to the left chest hitting his heart.

Deputies arrived at the Palmetto Gun Club on Summer Drive in Dorchester County just after 7 a.m. According to Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet, Rust was found on the ground outside a shooting hut.

The coroner's office says he died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Nisbet said authorities believe the body has been there since Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say he was a member of the gun club and was apparently out there since Wednesday night for target practice. According to his wife, he always practiced gun safety and taught his three sons the same.

Authorities say Rust worked at MUSC in the computer IT Department and was an Avid shooter and gun collector.

This incident remains under investigation.
