COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - South Carolina Republicans are meeting to elect a new chairman who will oversee preparations and fundraising for the state's first-in-the-South presidential primary next year.
Saturday's convention has a three-way race for chairman featuring Greenville lawyer Stephen Brown, Newberry County GOP chairman Chad Connelly and Orangeburg lawyer Bill Connor.
They winner must quickly to raise money for the primary. It's not cheap. South Carolina legislators are debating whether the state will pick up some of the primary's minimum $1.3 million cost or whether the Republican Party should foot the bill.
The party also released results of a straw poll from Friday night's fundraising dinner. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum won with 37% of the vote after being the only hopeful to show up for the dinner.
