JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Dustin Carroll and his family spend their weekends combing the shore of James Island looking for shells, shark teeth and other treasures. But nothing could prepare them for what they discovered Saturday.
Carroll says high tide had his family walking closer to shore when he spotted something out of place.
"I noticed something big in the water," says Carroll. "I looked down and I noticed it was a male, face down, tied up in the trees. I just turned and ran and called 911."
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office located the body soon after Carroll's call and say the man they found is possibly in his twenties wearing blue jeans and a black shirt.
Since the location of the body made it hard for Deputies to bring it on land the operation called for boats and divers to retrieve it.
Rescue teams pulled the body from the water, brought it to a boat landing and then had it taken to the coroner's office for and autopsy and proper identification.
Carroll says he was shocked to see a body washed ashore and says it may be awhile before he's family comes to walk the beach again.
