Cops bust 9, seize guns, $28,000 in drugs, cash

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston police arrested seven men Wednesday and confiscated guns, drugs and money from numerous apartments. The arrests were part of an ongoing investigation by the Charleston Police Department to combat narcotic activity in the downtown Charleston area.

In response to investigations involving the distribution of heroin, cocaine and marijuana, the Charleston Police Department's Special Investigations Unit served eight search warrants Wednesday at eight apartments in Bridge View Apartments located at 100 North Romney Street.

Police seized four handguns and a shotgun. One of the handguns was reported stolen along with the shotgun, which had its serial number removed. Police also confiscated $10,049 in cash and 40 morphine pills with a street value of $1,200; 39 grams of cocaine base with a street value of $3,900; 110.8 grams of cocaine with a street value of $11,100 and 152 grams of marijuana with a street value of $1,900.

One of the men arrested was a man wanted by North Charleston Police on an assault warrant. The following is the list of those arrested, cited and their charges:

  • Chawn Cherise Washington, 49, is charged with possession of cocaine base
  • Ricardo Evans, 23, is charged possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, possession with the intent to distribute cocaine base, trafficking heroin and trafficking cocaine
  • Daquan Brown, 21, is charged with trafficking cocaine, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and trafficking cocaine base
  • Navarro Bates, 26, is charged with possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and possession of ecstasy
  • Wanda Simmons, was cited for unlawful sale of alcohol and operating a business without a license
  • Tevon Seabrook, was arrested for an assault warrant that was issued by North Charleston Police
  • Herman Allen Smith, 29, is charged with possession of a stolen firearm and the unlawful possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number
  • Maurico Daval Curry, is charged with possession of a stolen firearm
  • Special Deborah Jenkins, 24, is charged with possession of marijuana
  • The investigation, which was executed with the assistance of the DEA, SLED, ATF, and FBI, is ongoing.
