JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

A Johns Island family can thank their chocolate Labrador Retriever, Princess, for helping them escape from their burning home on Thursday morning.

The fire happened around 3 a.m. on Burnswick Drive and is now under investigation.

Firefighters say two people were home at the time of the fire, which started near the kitchen.

The smoke alarm failed to alert the sleeping residents as it had been disabled due to its proximity to the kitchen and resulting frequency of false alarms.

Thankfully for them, Princess was alert to the danger and the couple were able to make it out in time.

Both were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The home is severely damaged.  Princess suffered no injuries.

The residents did say that the other fire alarm in the house, located on the other side of the structure, began sounding as they were stepping outside.

There is no word on what started the blaze. Multiple fire departments responded to the scene.
