Grocery store owner still critical after beating, shooting

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - "We see him every day. He frequents the store every day," Harry Wright said.

Harry Wright, whose brother was attacked outside of Wright's Grocery Store in Cross, said he knows the man suspected of shooting him very well. It is his neighbor, 25-year-old Byron Johnson.

"I was totally shocked because I didn't expect him to have been involved with something like this," Wright said.

Wright says his brother was shot in the arm and the bullet then lodged in his ribs. He also has a fractured jaw and is in critical condition at Trident Hospital.

Johnson is accused of beating and shooting 79-year-old Elijah Wright early Monday morning.

The judge set bond at $580,000. Johnson is charged with attempted murder and armed robbery, which each carries a 30-year sentence.

Wright said while he wants to see justice for his brother, his heart goes out to Johnson's family.

"It's a mix of emotions, especially for the mother. She's just the nicest person you'd ever meet," Wright said.

Johnson's next court appearance is set for July 15.
