Speeding Mom charged after overturning car with baby inside

HOLLYWOOD, SC (WCSC) - A mother was hospitalized and charged overnight Wednesday after losing control of her car and overturning with her 8-month-old child in the car.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office says that 25-year-old Debra Melville of Jacksonboro was traveling at a high-rate of speed when she lost control of her Ford Mustang and overturned on Highway 174 in Hollywood. Melville was ejected from the vehicle.

Deputies say Melville's 8-month-old child and an adult passenger were in the car during the accident. All three were admitted to the hospital. The baby and adult passenger have been released. Melville's injuries are not life threatening, according to the sheriff's office.

Melville is charged with reckless driving, no seatbelt, unsafe motor vehicle (very little tread on tires) and no SC driver's license. Deputies say there were no signs of impairment.
