Police: Teen arrested after pointing gun at elementary school students

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - An 18-year-old was arrested on Tuesday morning after pointing a gun in the direction of Chicora Elementary School students, North Charleston police say.

18-year-old Monterio Harquez Brown is charged with unlawful possession of a pistol and providing false information to police.

Police say Brown pointed a cocked and loaded .40 caliber handgun in the direction of a number of students walking into the school located on Success Street around 7:45 a.m.  According to the incident report, Brown was standing on the front porch of a home located across the street.

Students notified teachers and North Charleston Police Department officers arrived on the scene to find Brown standing on the porch with some friends.

The report states that Brown ran inside the home when officers approached.  The homeowner told police that she didn't know Brown but that he was her son's friend.

Police say Brown eventually came out and the loaded, cocked gun was found beneath a drawer in a night stand inside the room Brown hid in.

Brown initially gave police a fake name.  He was arrested and taken to the Charleston County Detention Center.
