Hospitals set to go to court after mediation fails

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Roper St. Francis Healthcare and Trident Health System announced Thursday that the two hospitals have not reached an agreement after participating in a mediation.

The two are set to go to trial sometime this year.

The two hospitals have been participating in mediation in an effort to resolve the lawsuit involving each organization's applications to build hospitals in Berkeley County.

Trident Health System originally proposed building a 50-bed hospital in Moncks Corner while Roper St. Francis Healthcare planned for a 50-bed hospital at Carnes Crossroads near Goose Creek.

Both applications were approved by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control in June 2009, but were delayed because of the pending lawsuit in which Roper St. Francis Healthcare and Trident Health System challenged each other's project.

The case was scheduled to go to trial on May 2; however, the trial was postponed to give the parties a meaningful opportunity to mediate. The mediator was an independent person who worked with both hospitals to facilitate the negotiations.
