GEORGETOWN, SC (WCSC) - An overdue boater has been found safe Friday morning in the Winyah Bay of Georgetown.
Phillip Hixon, 29, was located by a Coast Guard Station Charleston 24-foot Special Purpose Craft rescue boat crew around 4:45 a.m. Nixon was conducting normal operations and was not in distress.
Operational watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston were notified at approximately 1:30 a.m., Friday from Hixon's father, reporting that he had not returned by sunset as expected.
Rescue crews from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston used an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and Coast Guard Station Charleston sent a 24-foot special purpose craft to help the search. The Georgetown County Sherriff's Department also assisted.
The Coast Guard recommends filing a written float plan with a family member or friend prior to getting underway and also attending a Coast Guard Auxiliary safe boating course.
