FORT LEE, VA (WTVR/CNN) – A mom following in her children's footsteps decided to join the Army and lost 70 pounds to do it.
"I was a little bit nervous, not being from a military family, I had no idea what to expect," Madrid said.
After nine weeks of basic training and five weeks at Fort Lee, VA, Pfc. June Madrid said she has no regrets about her decision.
Three years ago Madrid did not know what to think when her son decided to join the Army, and months later, her 17-year-old daughter followed.
"She saw the benefits, the bonuses and all that type of thing," Madrid said about her daughter. "She was a junior in high school; she went to basic training the summer between her junior and senior year."
About a year and a half ago, Madrid decided to make the same decision and join the military.
"I get nervous about my future, as far as the whole Social Security thing and just all that," Madrid said.
There was just one problem standing in her way - her weight.
"I was over 200 pounds, and so, they gave me what I needed to be at, so I started on my journey to get there," Madrid said. "It took a year and a half, and I lost 70 pounds."
At 38, Madrid is the second oldest in her platoon and a role model too many half her age.
"I think it's neat that she chose to come here, take an adventure and have fun with it while securing her future," said Ryell Kelly.
Madrid has five more weeks at Fort Lee, and then she leaves for another seven weeks of advanced training in Texas.
