ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a 14-year-old boy shot his father by accident early Thursday morning while the two were searching the yard for a possible intruder.
According to deputies, the 35-year-old father and his son were outside their Drag Strip Road home looking for an intruder. Authorities were called to the home, which is located in the town of North in Orangeburg County, around 3 a.m. after the son allegedly shot his father because he thought he was the intruder.
The father and son separated while circling the home and the son told investigators that he called out to his father, but he didn't respond. At that point, the son shot his father in the arm and chest with a long rifle, thinking he was the intruder.
The father was transported to Richland Memorial Hospital by air and was alert when deputies arrived. Deputies say the son showed remorse for his actions and that both the father and son said the shooting was an accident.
The son was armed with a .22 caliber long rifle, according to the police report. The boy's grandfather said that the gun belonged to the boy.
