BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Police arrested a 29-year-old man accused of burglarizing a pawn shop then leading officers in a car chase in Moncks Corner.
The Moncks Corner Police Department charged Elijah McCray Jr. of Andrews with burglary and failure to stop for blue lights.
On Sunday night, an officer was responding to the Money Man Pawn on 435 North Highway 52 for an alarm. When he arrived, the officer saw a Chevy sedan sitting in front of a bay door. The officer says he saw McCray stick his head out of the driver side door and begin to back up.
The officer then attempted to block the car and told McCray to stop. A police report states that McCray sped out of the parking lot and got onto Highway 52 where a pursuit started.
When McCray got to Old Mill Road, he started to slow down his car and jump out, according to authorities. Police say the suspect then opened the driver's side door which struck a patrol car.
According to police, McCray left his vehicle, ran towards the woods and was then tackled by an officer.
McCray was also charged with operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to surrender and improper vehicle license. He was locked up at the Hill-Finlea Detention Center.
