Cops arrest man seen roaming Ashley Phospate Rd with gun

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A man seen walking along Ashley Phosphate Road and Spartan Boulevard loading a gun early Tuesday morning is now behind bars.

North Charleston police officers were dispatched to the area of Ashley Phosphate Road and Spartan Boulevard in reference to a man loading a gun in the road with a light on his head. Upon arrival, officers recovered the gun from the suspect's waistband and detained him.

Cory Jamaal Chatman, 29, is charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol. When asked what he was doing,

Chatman told police he was looking for his cell phone, the police report states. When asked why he was carrying a gun, Chatman said "because people are crazy out here at night."

Chatman was placed under arrest after it was determined that he did not have a concealed weapons permit.

The suspect was transported to Charleston County Detention Center.
