KINGSTREE, SC (WCSC) - Police are investigating a deadly shooting they say happened in a housing complex off Lexington Avenue. Residents were shocked to hear of the shooting happening so close to home.
"I was sitting in the house as it happened and I was like oh God, where's my babies? The first thing I did she was at the park. I was like wow, right there like inches away from where it happened at," Angela Primas said.
Longtime residents say Frierson Housing Complex has been a quiet and safe place to live, until they heard about the deadly shooting near the playground.
"I'm very concerned because my little girl was at the park at the time it happened," Primas said.
Kingstree Police Chief Robert Ford says officers responded to the shooting just after 9pm Tuesday night. "By the time officers and EMS arrived on scene, our victim had already died," Chief Ford said.
The Williamsburg County Coroner's Office says 21-year-old Travis Chapman of Kingstree died of multiple gunshot wounds.
The Police Chief says the victim and suspect knew each other, and witnesses say the two were friends, but some sort of argument had sparked between the two.
Police arrested 20-year-old Joshua Wallace of Kingstree for the deadly shooting, after they say he turned himself in.
Residents of Frierson say the victim and his family is in their thoughts and prayers.
"I hope that something like that will never happen again. That was very heartbreaking to see someone that you knew laying down there like that," Primas said.
The Police Chief was at MUSC as the victim's autopsy was performed Wednesday morning. He says the exact cause of the argument and shooting is still under investigation. Police say 21-year-old Joshua Wallace turned himself in about an hour and a half after the shooting. They say he did not have a weapon on him at the time.
This is the first murder of the year in the small town of Kingstree.
