ORANGEBURG, SC (WCSC) - Authorities need help identifying a man who took nearly $1,000 from an elderly woman's purse at a hospital in Orangeburg Monday morning.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office says that a man approached a 79-year-old woman at the Regional Medical Center to assist her in getting her car.
According to investigators, the woman gave the individual her keys and when the man returned with the vehicle, the woman noticed her purse was missing.
Officers say they located the purse but it was missing close to $1,000.
"This incident is particularly unnerving because this woman believed in the willingness of this man to render aid to her as she was leaving a health care facility, instead he made her a victim by stealing her money. Preying on the elderly is a serious crime against humanity," said Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.
Anyone with information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the suspect is asked to contact Crimestoppers at 888-CRIME-SC.
