WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Police responded to a deadly shooting at the Georgetown Apartments Wednesday night.
Charleston Police say they found 22-year-old Aakeem Smalls shot near building C just after 10:15 p.m. Wednesday. Medics transported him to MUSC, where he later died. The Charleston County Coroner's Office says Smalls died of a gunshot wound.
The complex, which has seen crime and shootings in the past, is located at the corner of Orange Grove Road and Mulmar Street.
Residents and their families say they are now living in fear.
"They need to have more security in here. They need to have better camera systems. Something has got to be done," a concerned citizen said. "This is not fair to the people that pay their rent to live here and have to live in fear."
This woman did not want to be identified, especially knowing that the shooter was still on the run. Police returned to the apartment complex during the day to question residents and try to identify the suspect.
Neighbors said they heard multiple gunshots fired and then saw many officers pull into the complex. Some residents say while the shooting is a concern, they don't feel scared living in the complex.
"We did our research before we moved here. We moved here about six months ago from out of state," Jessica Pimental said. "Occasionally these things do happen, I just hope that it's not a reflection of the direction the neighborhood is going."
Other residents say they aren't shocked or surprised to hear of another serious crime in the Georgetown Apartments complex.
No one from the apartment complex was available for comment, and the complex was unable to provide a corporate contact to Live 5 News.
Police have not identified the suspect in this shooting. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
