WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - A tearful Miles Smalls had a very simple message for the two men that are suspected of shooting and killing his 22-year-old son.

"Your lives are over too," Smalls said.

Two suspects arrested in connection with a murder at a West Ashley apartment complex were denied bond Saturday morning.

The Charleston Police Department arrested 29-year-old Diangelo Lavar Bumcum of Charleston and 27-year-old Devin Jamel Johnson of Mt. Pleasant Friday after receiving a credible witness statement.

Both suspects face charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

"And I don't even think whatever time they get will be deserving enough because that's how much I miss my son," Smalls said.

According to the affidavit, just after 10 p.m. Wednesday 22-year-old Aakeem Smalls was having an ongoing dispute with the two suspects at an apartment unit in West Ashley about money. The dispute was taken onto a porch where a witness said she heard gunshots...

The affidavit states Smalls was shot multiple times and died at MUSC later that night, a night that his father will never forget.

"The whole act was so senseless," Miles Smalls said. "I still haven't understood why it had to happen. I'm not the type of person to hold a lot of anger and hatred for long but anger is the other word I can think of right now."

Johnson was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Task Force Friday afternoon in Orangeburg while Bumcum was arrested late Friday night in West Ashley.

A police affidavit states a witness to the shooting identified both suspects by sight, nickname and a photographic line-up.

"He made mistakes, I'm sure they made mistakes - this whole situation is a mistake, but they still have a chance to make up for it," Small said.
