WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Two suspects arrested in connection with a murder at a West Ashley apartment complex have a long history of breaking the law.
Charleston police arrested 29-year-old Diangelo Lavar Buncum and 27-year-old Devin Jamel Johnson on Friday and charged them with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
According to a background check with the State Law Enforcement Division, Johnson has been arrested more than 10 times since 2001. Some of the charges filed against him include Simple possession of marijuana, crack cocaine and ecstasy; criminal conspiracy; resisting arrest; receiving stolen goods; threatening the life of a person, family or official; driving under the influence; failure to appear; and contempt of family court.
Buncum has been arrested at least eight times since 2003. His rap sheet includes charges of burglary, possession of cocaine, criminal domestic violence, prostitution and failure to appear.
According to the affidavit in the murder case, just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, 22-year-old Aakeem Smalls was having an ongoing dispute with the two suspects at an apartment unit in West Ashley about money. The dispute was taken onto a porch where a witness said she heard gunshots.
The affidavit states Smalls was shot multiple times and died at MUSC later that night, a night that his father will never forget.
