JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Hazy skies still linger around Johns Island after firefighters battled a brush fire Tuesday.
St. Johns Fire Department crews fought the brush fire off Main Road on Johns Island on Tuesday.
According to authorities, the fire was between Chisholm Road and Brownswood Road, near St. Johns High School.
Captain James Ghi said that crews wrapped things up around 3 p.m. and officials from the South Carolina Forestry Commission had vacated the scene.
Main road reopened around 3 p.m. also, according to officials.
Units from the St. Johns Fire Department, City of Charleston Fire Department, and James Island Fire Department responded to the scene.
The fire was contained to 23 acres. Captain Ghi said that the burned area will continue to smolder until substantial rainfall can provide moisture for the forest bed. He also said that the area would be monitored on a regular basis to ensure the fire stays contained.
Red cross volunteers set up a canteen at St. Johns High School to provide water, snack and emergency aid for firefighters working to put out the fire.
