DANIEL ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

English soccer fans will be excited to hear that the Charleston Battery will be hosting another English team this summer at Blackbaud Stadium.

Portsmouth Football Club has agreed to take on the Battery on Wednesday, July 27, marking the 2nd consecutive year that an English team comes to the Lowcountry.

Last year, the Battery hosted the Bolton Wanderers, a Premier League side, in front of a sold out crowd of 5,249.

Portsmouth, or Pompey as they are more commonly referred to in Great Britain, are now playing in the Championship, one division below the Premier League.

Portsmouth fans have experienced an array of emotions recently, as they triumphed in the 2008 FA Cup before falling in the 2010 FA Cup 1-0 to Premier Leaguers Chelsea.

In that same season Portsmouth filed bankruptcy, also referred to as administration, and were demoted to the Championship.  They finished 16th out of a possible 24 places last year, posting a record of 15 wins, 13 draws, and 18 losses.

The club, formed in 1898, features several notables including Republic of Ireland winger Liam Lawrence and team captain Aaron Mokoena, of South Africa.

The team is managed by Steve Cotterill.
