CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

With an unobstructed, 360 degree view, the Peoples Building on Broad Street in downtown Charleston was the city's first skyscraper. The beauty above is guarded eight stories below by two marble lions. But early Friday morning, that changed and its causing a roar.

"As crazy as it sounds every bodies really in mourning," says Steve Peck, property manager of the building.

Peck was the first person to see one of the 60-year-old marble lions shattered on the sidewalk.

"The parts that were left weighed well over 200 pounds," says Peck. "If I were to guess, I think the complete weight is well over 400 pounds so someone had to give the lion a shove to get it off the pedestal."

That someone Peck is referring to made it away with the lion's head. A piece of history, he says, was carved back in the 18th century.

Kit Porter owns an art gallery on the ground level of the Peoples Building and says this isn't the first time the statue's have been vandalized but it is the worst.

"We've seen some vandalism on those particular pieces before but it's been minor," says Porter. "I've walked past them and seen one wearing a T-shirt and that always upset me but to walk by and see one laying on the ground, smashed into a million pieces and the head missing possibly forever is so upsetting."

The Charleston Police Department is still looking for the people responsible for vandalizing the marble lion.

If you have any information you are asked to call police.
