A fire near a landscaping company on Highway 78 has been extinguished. North Charleston fire officials say that fire hoses no longer block the road and all lanes on Highway 78 are open to traffic.
A mulch fire closed the road in both directions Sunday and Monday morning. The road reopened briefly Monday morning and then went back down to one lane. All lanes are now open again.
Crews were called out around 2 p.m. Sunday to a large mulch pile on fire at Highway 78. A total of three mulch and wood piles the size of two-story buildings have been smoldering, but the fires are under control.
Firefighters say the main concern was putting out the hot spots burning within the mulch piles. The fire did not threatening any buildings or residential areas.
Five fire units, including four engines and one ladder truck continue to monitor the situation closely.
