Cost-sharing agreement made for harbor deepening study

The deepening of Charleston's harbor is a step closer to completion. The Army Corps of Engineers and the State Ports Authority signed a cost-sharing agreement for the funding to study the project.

The Corps of Engineers announced last month it will spend $150,000 to study the deepening of the harbor to allow for larger ships in the future. The Corps hopes the study can be completed in four years.

Lawmakers hope to get an additional $1.2 million in the budget for the federal fiscal year to continue the work.
