Motorcyclist dead after falling more than 100 ft. in accident

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Matthew Garelli, 22, died this morning after he crashed his 2007 Honda motorcycle into a retaining wall near Ravenel Bridge, falling more than 100 feet over the side of the bridge.

It happened around 1:15 Wednesday morning between the entrance to I-26 and the Cooper River Bridge. Officers shut down two westbound lanes for a few hours overnight while they cleared the accident. Garelli's motorcycle could be seen laying in the road.

Police say Garelli hit the side wall of the interstate and was thrown over the side rail into the trees and bushes below. He was taken to M.U.S.C. with substantial injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.

Garelli was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
