CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police arrested a 20-year-old man accused of using a crowbar to break into an ATM machine in downtown early Wednesday morning.
The Charleston Police Department charged Robert James Sample with safecracking and simple possession of marijuana.
Around 12 a.m., a clerk at a nearby hotel saw a man attempting to break into the South Carolina Federal Credit Union ATM machine on 140 Bee Street. The clerk called the police and provided a description of the man and the vehicle he was driving.
Officers say they arrived on scene and stopped a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's vehicle.
During the investigation, police say they were able to identify Sample as the man attempting to break into the ATM. Officers say they also discovered that Sample had a small amount of marijuana in his possession.
Sample was locked up at the Charleston County Detention Center. Police are continuing the investigation.
