MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Drivers beware. Major construction on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard near Bowman Road began Saturday and is expected to last until Spring 2012.
Workers will close northbound and southbound lanes of Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and divert traffic onto new ramps that will cross over Bowman Road.
The detour will allow workers enough room to start on the new bridge that will build built over Bowman Road to unclog backup in the area.
The detour will remain in effect until the bridge is completed and traffic can be restored to Highway 17 as it was before.
Charleston County officials say the goal of the project is to improve the traffic flow in and out of Mount Pleasant. Especially around school and work hours.
