Bottlenose dolphin rescued on Johns Island

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Wildlife officials have rescued a bottlenose dolphin that has been stranded by low water and mud in Charleston County.

The 2-year-old female dolphin was stuck about 50 yards from a deep-water creek.

Neighbors near the pluff mud flat off Bohicket Creek called the National Ocean Service's marine mammal stranding program after noticing the animal stuck for several days.

Scientist Wayne McFee says rescue officials tried to chase her out of the area with a boat, then an airboat and other craft. That only succeeded in scaring the dolphin.

So they put on big boots and waded through the mud and carried the dolphin to a deep-water dock where she went into the water and swam away.
