Man accused of killing seagull asks for continuance

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - The man accused of killing a seagull on Folly Beach asked for a continuance Friday morning.

Police charged 32-year-old Louis Hoppmann III of West Ashley with animal cruelty. Witnesses say he hit the bird with a bat on June 18.

The case was expected to be heard Friday, but Hoppman called in a request for a continuance so he could have an attorney present for the next court proceeding. His next court date has not been set.

According to police, Hoppmann said he and his friends were playing a beach game when he noticed more than a dozen of the birds hovering over his blanket of food.

He reportedly hit the seagull in the head as it was flying over the beach. A tourist found the bird and took it to Pet Helpers, an organization that tries to protect animals. The seagull reportedly suffered a broken wing and died from head trauma.
