GOOSE CREEK, SC (AP) - A 2-year-old pit bull is recovering at a Berkeley County shelter after animal control officers found him dragging a logging chain that was buried in his neck.
Media reports that the dog was found Wednesday along a road near Goose Creek.
The executive director of the local animal shelter says it's a horrific case of animal abuse. The dog had been chained up for so long that the chain was cutting into the skin around his neck.
Marcia Atkinson with the Doc Williams Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says a veterinarian cut out the chain and a 5-inch strip of dead tissue.
The shelter's staff has named him Lucky. They hope to find him a home after he recovers.
