Suspect in string of Summerville car break-ins caught on video

A man suspected of breaking into several cars in a Summerville neighborhood was caught on camera by one of the victims.

A resident in the Gahagan Plantation neighborhood caught the suspect in a string of recent car break-ins on a video camera he had mounted on his garage. The video shows a white male approximately 5'8" and weighing 140 pounds, enter the driver's side door of the vehicle parked in the driveway.

The suspect appeared to notice the camera and fled. He was wearing light-colored clothing, glasses and was carrying a backpack.

Summerville police responded to several reports of car break-ins over the last few days.

The first incident occurred Monday on Bay Berry Run where police say a man stole a man's wallet and his wife's prescription medicine from a car parked in the driveway.

The second incident was reported Tuesday on Telfair Court where the alleged thief snatched car speakers, tools and a BB gun from two cars parked outside the home. Police estimate the value of the stolen items to be about $1,000.

The alleged thief struck again Wednesday, breaking into cars at two home on Factors Walk. Police say the suspect shattered the driver side window of one car and stole a handgun and a wallet, which contained a credit and debit card. A check book was taken from the second car parked at the same residence.

Police later noticed the shattered window of another car, parked at a different home on Factors Walk. After interviewing the victim, it was discovered that the driver side window of the car was shattered and a GPS, iPod, speaker and amp were stolen.

No arrests have been made, but police are reviewing the video footage as the investigation continues.
