COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - A 58-year-old Spartanburg County man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting a groom-to-be in the head hours before his wedding.
WYFF-TV reports that Louie Chapman of Inman was convicted Thursday of attempted murder. He must serve at least 80 percent of his sentence.
Prosecutors say 28-year-old Justin Thorne was at his grandmother's house to pick up a wedding gift in July 2010 when Chapman shot him in the back of the head. Thorne was released from the hospital a day later.
The bullet lodged in soft tissue at the base of Thorne's skull, and doctors decided not to remove it.
Investigators say Chapman fled after stealing Thorne's grandmother's car. He was arrested in Anderson County days later.
Prosecutors say Chapman has a lengthy criminal record.
