Man accused of shooting, beating up grocery store owner due in court

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The man accused of beating up a 79-year-old store clerk in Berkeley County is due back in court Friday.

Byron Johnson, 25, is charged with attempted robbery and armed robbery.  Authorities say Johnson will appear for a "roll call" on Friday where he will be asked if he will be able to provide his own attorney.

Berkeley County sheriff's deputies say they found the victim in the parking lot of Wright's Grocery on Old Highway 6 in Cross on May 23.

The victim was shot in the arm and the bullet then lodged in his ribs. He also suffered a fractured jaw.
