PAWLEY'S ISLAND, SC (WMBF) - After the Coast Guard called off a search for possible missing swimmers off Pawley's Island Thursday night, emergency crews are questioning if there were ever swimmers in distress.
Early Thursday evening, the Coast Guard was searching for four swimmers with a helicopter and boat. The Coast Guard was called in by a person who claims to have seen the four swimmers in distress.
The Midway Fire Rescue team spoke with WMBF News Friday morning and says they believe no one was ever in trouble while in the water Thursday evening. The crew could not find any evidence to dispute that the incident regarding four missing swimmers never actually occurred.
First responders say the search has been called off Friday morning.
