GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - Peaches are among South Carolina's top crops, and a festival honoring the sweet, fuzzy fruit is under way this weekend in Gaffney.
Events planned for Saturday at the South Carolina Peach Festival include a road race, parade and barbecue cook-off. There is also a family fun fest and a car show.
The festival kicked off Thursday with a dessert contest and talent night. Festivities wrap up next weekend with a beauty pageant and a four-wheel-drive event known as a "mud bog."
Farmers said balmy weather early this year had peach trees in northern South Carolina trees blooming much earlier than normal. Last year, South Carolina's peach crop was valued at $40 million.
