COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Just before 5 a.m. Saturday, the Colleton County Sheriff's Office says they got a call from a man that had just been shot, three times, while working in the yard of a construction company.
The 64-year-old man told authorities he was loading a piece of heavy equipment for a future job when someone came up from behind him and shot him in the head.
"I couldn't believe it," said his employer, Jeff Hiers, standing outside MUSC hospital where the man was transported. "It's sad to say, we've been broken into four times over the last five years and it's a shame its come to this now. We've actually had somebody shot on the property."
Hiers says he was able to check on his employee that has worked with him for the past seven years and says it'll take some time but he should make a good recovery.
"His lung has been punctured," says Hiers. "It should heal on its own. Other than that he's going to have some cosmetic surgery done to his face."
Authorities say the three shots that where fired hit the victim in the head and in the shoulder area.
Hiers says it could have been much worse, prompting the owner of the construction company to think of relocating his business, due to crime, out of Colleton County.
"It's something I'm thinking about a lot," he says. "Something I've got to decide to put up with and tolerate it or relocate."
The Sheriff's Office says the suspect, or suspects, that shot the man still haven't been found. They ask if anyone has information in the case to contact the Colleton County Sheriff's Office or CrimeStoppers at 843-554-1111.
