COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Three people were transported by helicopter to a Georgia hospital Thursday morning after an SUV overturned and hit a tree in Colleton County. The driver has been charged.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, A Dodge Durango traveling west on Confederate Highway attempted to pass another vehicle. The driver lost control of the Durango, ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a tree and overturned.
Three of the four passengers were taken by helicopter to an Augusta, Ga. hospital. The driver was taken to Colleton County Medical Center. A fourth passenger was not injured. All three passengers taken by helicopter were not wearing seatbelts.
The driver, 20-year-old Santa Cruz Martinez-Ortiz, of Mexico, was charged with driving too fast for conditions and not having a SC driver's license.
The collision is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
