Heat advisories, warnings issued as SC cooks

CHARLESTON, SC (AP) - - South Carolina is baking under a white, hazy sky as temperatures soar and heat warnings and advisories have been issued.

By noon the mercury climbed to 97 in Columbia and Darlington and 95 in Charleston. An excessive heat warning is in effect for the north coast and Pee Dee with heat indeces expected to rise to 115.

Heat advisories are in effect for the rest of the state except the mountains.

Charleston to socialize and stay cool. Sixty-nine-year-old Glenda Cleveland of Charleston says she worries about her electric bill and so turns off her air conditioning for hours at a time, even in the heat wave, to conserve.

Forecasters warn people should drink a lot of fluids and stay inside.
