Police: Newberry infant shot in the face

NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Newberry infant was sent to the hospital after she was shot in the face.

Police say 26-year-old Melvin Prophet fired a shot into an apartment complex Friday night and hit an infant less than one year old.

The little girl was shot in the face and was flown to a hospital in Columbia with non-life-threatening injuries.

Newberry authorities say Prophet meant to hit another man in the room.

Prophet has been arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

Prophet was being held at the Newberry County jail, and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
