Coroner: Man found dead in Mt. Pleasant was homeless

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Authorities have identified the man found dead behind a Mt. Pleasant Piggly Wiggly last Friday.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office says the remains found near the Seaside Farms community are of 42-year-old Joseph Peters, a homeless man. The cause of death is still under investigation.

Mt. Pleasant police say children playing in the area behind the grocery store on Riviera Drive discovered the body around 4:30 p.m. The incident report states that kids found the body near a tent in a wooded area.

Investigators say they believe the body has been at the location for a while since it appears to be decomposed. Mt. Pleasant police say there were no weapons found near the body.

Peters was recently involved in moped crash on July 10 in which he was ticketed for driving under the influence. According to the report from that incident, Peters drove his moped across traffic near the corner of Highway 517 and Rifle Range Road, striking a car.

The report states that Peters was unconscious for 5 to 10 minutes when officers arrived on scene. The report also indicates that Peters is from St. Louis, Missouri.
