BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley County authorities found the body of a 77-year-old man who had been missing for 13 days Monday afternoon.
The Berkeley County Coroner's Office confirmed that the body found Monday on Thomas Walters Road in Pineville is that of James Spann. Spann hadn't been seen in 13 days since walking away from his home.
At 4 p.m. Monday, a search team from the fire department located Spann's body in a heavily wood area about a quarter of a mile from his home. The brush was so thick it was impossible to spot him from the air. Search crews had to cut their way through the brush to reach the body.
The coroner has ruled Spann's death as natural and says that heat was a contributing factor.
Members of The Berkeley County Rescue Squad, Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, Eadytown Fire Dept., SC Department of Natural Resources, The Starr Search Team from Columbia, SLED and a number of volunteers had searched the area around his home.
