CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County is cutting cost by going green at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.
285 solar panels have been installed on the roof of the building thanks to a federal grant from the state. It's part of the detention center expansion project.
The detention center is Charleston County's largest energy user and officials estimate the panels will save the county 15 to 18 thousand dollars a year.
Since being installed, the system has produced over 14 megawatts of power an hour which is equal to what a car would produce burning 1200 hundred gallons of gas.
