Bond reduced for great grandmother accused of leaving kids in car

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) -

Bond was reduced for an 81-year-old great grandmother accused of leaving two children and a dog in a car for almost an hour.

Attorney Lionel Lofton says Geneva Johnson's bond has been reduced from $50,000 to $10,000. Johnson was charged with two counts of unlawful conduct towards a child and currently free on bond.

Johnson is accused of leaving an 8-year-old girl, 9-year-old boy and a dog in a locked car at a West Ashley Walmart parking lot on July 13.

Authorities say that the children's great grandmother was in the store shopping.

According to investigators, during the time the kids were in the car, there were excessive heat warnings and temperatures reaching more than 100 degrees.  Johnson's attorney and friends say it was a case of a lapse in judgement and that the woman is not a criminal.
