COTTAGEVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Cottageville council members will have a special meeting to discuss if the town should only have council members and no mayor.
They will also have a first reading on dissolving the town's police department.
The idea is partly because of the May 16 shooting death of former Mayor Bert Reeves. But those who support the plan say it could also save the town money.
Cottageville is hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Many people who live there though say crime would skyrocket without police officers.
The Colleton County Sheriff's Office would patrol the area, but would not be stationed there full-time.
