Pastor accused of kidnappings was prominent figure at church

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A pastor accused of kidnapping and raping two women was a prominent figure in another local church before he took charge of a church in Ladson.

Dale Richardson is currently being held on more than $1 million bond.

Richardson was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Summerville. According to the church secretary, Richardson started the church in his own living room.

North Charleston police say in two different incidents, Richardson kidnapped women at gunpoint after offering them rides, tied their hands and then took them to unknown locations where he allegedly sexually assaulted them.

One happened on July 27 and the other in August of last year, according to authorities.

A church secretary says Richardson joined Cornerstone in 1992 and left in 2004. The secretary said Richardson was,"The epitome of a Christian man."

Richardson is also facing charges by Summerville police for kidnapping a woman at gunpoint in the Lakes of Summerville neighborhood on June 21.

The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office says charges also are pending from their agency.
