Woman charged with felony DUI in death of motorcyclist in Berkeley Co.

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A woman has been charged with felony DUI after a fatal accident in Berkeley County that left a motorcyclist dead this week.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has charged 20-year-old Shelbie Lynn Smith of Mint Hill, North Carolina, with felony DUI, simple possession of marijuana and open container in a motor vehicle. She was given a bond of $250,000.

According to authorities, Smith's car collided with a motorcycle driven by 30-year-old Lonnie Lee Ewan, of Ladson, on Treeland Drive. Ewan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ewan died from head and body trauma and was not wearing a helmet.

The accident is under investigation by highway patrol and The Berkeley County Coroner's Office.  More details will be released by the highway patrol.

According to the State Law Enforcement Division, Smith was arrested for burglary in Jan. 2009 and driving under suspension in July 2008.
