KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Emergency officials say a 5-year-old boy was flown to the hospital after getting trapped in an elevator shaft at a home on Kiawah Island.
Authorities say that the boy was flown to MUSC in stable condition. The incident happened around noon Tuesday at a private residence on Eagle Point Road.
St. Johns Fire and Rescue Captain James T. Ghi said the boy's leg was lodged between the elevator car and shaft, with the child's body hanging below the elevator car. Ghi also said that the boy's father was holding onto the child's leg when rescue responders arrived on scene.
Officials said they put a ladder in the elevator shaft so that the child could secure himself. Then they began removing flooring material from around his leg using hand tools and a chain saw. Crews worked for about 25 minutes before the boy was safely freed, according to Captain Ghi.
Charleston County EMS said the boy suffered injuries to his arm and eye. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
